On 22 May 2009 I’ve stated that supporting IE6 depends who are your users and who do you address to. I’ve said not to rush by not supporting a old browser, such as IE6 without knowing who do you address to.
Along with the above thought was that IE6 had a considerable market share when I’ve written the article.
The debate continues.
According to Market Share, IE6 had a market share of almost 30% in 2009 and dropping down heavily. W3Schools shows IE6 with a 13.6% usage in August, 2009.
Internet Explorer 6 will lose a lot of field in the next coming months (Google Chrome is winning a lot of market share, it appears). IE6 will lose a lot, but it’s important now to see how are your users and what browser they use.
It’s stupid to ignore the 30% of your visitators who are using IE6 and you’ve decided not to support the browser.
A solution.
A solution (see the below campaign) is to let your IE6 users know of disadvantages of still using Internet Explorer 6. The disadvantages are for the both sides, both users and both developers that still find it difficult to support IE6.
Although it’s not the first campaign of it’s kind, Richard Barros launched updateyourbrowser.net for users to update their browsers, targeting the IE6 users mainly.
A solution for IE6’s users to update is by inserting the Javascript in the HEAD section:
Also, you can opt by inserting a banner on your website or blog’s sidebar:
As a result of IE6 dropping down in market share Artmov will only support IE6 by request only.
